Ingredients
Scale
Grains and Lentils
- 1 cup long grain or basmati white rice (Choose basmati for an aromatic twist)
- 2 cups brown lentils (Provides protein and earthy flavor)
Liquids
- 4.5 cups water (Needed for cooking)
- 0.5 cup olive oil (Adds richness and helps to caramelize the onions)
Vegetables and Seasonings
- 2 large yellow onions (Thinly sliced)
- 1 teaspoon salt (Enhances overall flavor)
- 2 teaspoons cumin (Key spice for fragrance)
Instructions
- Prepare the rice: Rinse the rice thoroughly under cold water to remove excess starch, then soak it in a bowl of water for at least 30 minutes to help it cook evenly and achieve a fluffy texture.
- Caramelize the onions: Heat the olive oil in a large pot over medium heat. Add the thinly sliced yellow onions and sauté them gently, stirring occasionally, until they turn a deep golden brown, developing rich caramelized flavors. This should take about 15-20 minutes.
- Add lentils to onions: Stir the rinsed and drained brown lentils into the pot with the caramelized onions and cook for about 2 minutes to combine the flavors before adding liquid.
- Cook the lentils: Pour 4.5 cups of water into the pot, increase heat, and bring the mixture to a rolling boil.
- Add rice and season: Drain the soaked rice and add it to the boiling lentil mixture. Season with 1 teaspoon salt and 2 teaspoons cumin. Stir gently to distribute the spices evenly without breaking the rice grains.
- Simmer the dish: Lower the heat to a gentle simmer, cover the pot with a tight-fitting lid, and cook for about 20-25 minutes or until the rice and lentils are tender, and all the water is absorbed.
- Rest before serving: Remove the pot from heat and let the Mujadara rest, covered, for about 10 minutes. This allows the flavors to meld and the texture to set before serving.
