Ingredients
Scale
Filling
- 1 can Black Beans
- 1 medium White Onion, diced
- 1 small Jalapeño Pepper, finely chopped (optional)
- 1 teaspoon Cumin
- 1 teaspoon Garlic Powder
- Salt and Pepper, to taste
- 1/4 cup Vegetable Broth or Water
Tortillas and Cooking
- 8 Corn Tortillas
- 1/4 cup Canola Oil (for frying, optional)
- 1 teaspoon Chili Powder (optional)
Instructions
- Prepare Filling: In a bowl, mash the black beans using a fork until creamy. Stir in the diced white onion, finely chopped jalapeño pepper if using, cumin, garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Slowly add the vegetable broth or water until the mixture reaches a thick but spreadable consistency.
- Fill Tortillas: Spoon about 2-3 tablespoons of the black bean filling onto the center of each corn tortilla. Roll each tortilla tightly, enclosing the filling securely to prevent it from spilling during cooking.
- Choose Cooking Method (Frying): Heat 1/4 to 1/2 cup of canola oil in a skillet over medium heat. Fry the flautas in batches for 3-5 minutes per side or until golden brown and crispy. Remove and drain on paper towels.
- Alternate Cooking Method (Baking): Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C). Place rolled flautas on a baking sheet, brush lightly with oil, and bake for 16-20 minutes until golden and crisp.
- Alternate Cooking Method (Air Frying): Preheat the air fryer to 390°F (199°C). Arrange the flautas in a single layer and cook for 11-12 minutes, turning halfway through, until golden and crispy.
- Serve & Enjoy: Allow flautas to cool for a minute before serving. Garnish with guacamole, salsa, or hot sauce according to preference for a flavorful finish.
Notes
- Use corn tortillas for authentic flavor; flour tortillas will change the texture.
- Adjust jalapeño quantity or omit for less spice.
- Vegetable broth adds moisture without extra fat; water works as a substitute.
- If frying, monitor oil temperature to avoid soggy flautas.
- Leftover flautas can be reheated in an oven or air fryer to retain crispiness.
