Description

Pretzel Christmas Crack, also known as Pretzel Toffee, is a festive and irresistible treat combining salty pretzels, rich buttery toffee, and smooth melted chocolate topped with colorful sprinkles. This easy-to-make dessert is perfect for holiday gatherings and sweet cravings, with its perfect balance of salty and sweet flavors and a delightful crunchy texture.

Ingredients

Scale

Base

  • 40-48 pretzel crisps (or pretzel crackers, or 2-3 cups pretzels, not sticks)

Toffee Mixture

  • 1 cup unsalted butter (2 sticks)
  • 1 cup packed brown sugar

Topping

  • 2 cups semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • ½ cup sprinkles (or M&M’s, or candies of choice)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven: Preheat your oven to 350℉ to prepare for baking the toffee and pretzel base.
  2. Prepare baking tray: Line a rimmed sheet pan (approximately 15″×10″) with parchment paper or aluminum foil sprayed with cooking spray, or use a nonstick silicone baking mat to prevent sticking.
  3. Arrange pretzels: Place the pretzel crisps in a single, even layer on the bottom of the tray. You may need to break a few pieces to fill gaps and ensure full pan coverage.
  4. Make toffee sauce: In a medium pot over medium-low heat, combine butter and brown sugar. Bring the mixture to a rolling boil while stirring occasionally. Continue to boil for 3 minutes until bubbling and amber-colored. (Optionally, monitor with a candy thermometer until reaching 270℉-290℉.) Remove from heat.
  5. Pour toffee over pretzels: Carefully pour the hot toffee mixture evenly over the pretzel layer. Quickly spread it with a spatula to cover all pretzels before it hardens.
  6. Bake: Place the tray in the preheated oven and bake for 3-5 minutes until the toffee mixture starts to bubble.
  7. Add chocolate chips: Remove from oven and immediately sprinkle chocolate chips evenly over the bubbling toffee. Let sit for 1-2 minutes to soften.
  8. Spread chocolate: Use a spatula to spread the melted chocolate evenly over the toffee layer. If the chocolate isn’t melting well, return the pan to the oven for an additional 1-2 minutes and then spread.
  9. Add sprinkles: Sprinkle your choice of sprinkles, M&M’s, or candies evenly on top of the melted chocolate.
  10. Cool and set: Allow the toffee to cool completely at room temperature or refrigerate for 30 minutes to 1 hour until the chocolate and toffee harden.
  11. Break into pieces: Once hardened, flip the tray to remove the toffee from the pan, peel off the parchment or foil, and break or cut the toffee into desired pieces.
  12. Serve and store: Enjoy immediately or store leftovers in an airtight container at room temperature or refrigerated.

Notes

  • Use pretzel crisps or crackers instead of pretzel sticks to ensure even toffee coverage and crunch.
  • For best results when boiling the toffee, using a candy thermometer helps achieve perfect hard crack stage (270℉-290℉).
  • You can customize the toppings by swapping sprinkles for M&M’s, candy pieces, or nuts.
  • Store in an airtight container to keep the toffee crisp and prevent the chocolate from melting.
  • To make cutting easier, refrigerate the toffee longer until thoroughly set.
  • Be cautious pouring hot toffee as it can cause burns; pour evenly and quickly for best coverage.
