Ingredients
Scale
Shrimp
- 1 pound raw peeled and deveined shrimp
- 1 tablespoon taco seasoning
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- Juice of ½ lime (from 1 lime, juiced divided)
Slaw
- 1½ cups shredded cabbage
- Juice of remaining ½ lime
- Pinch of salt
Crema
- ¼ cup sour cream
- ¼ teaspoon garlic powder
- Juice from ½ lime (remaining after shrimp marinade)
Toppings & Assembly
- 6 corn tortillas
- 1 avocado, sliced
- ¼ cup chopped fresh cilantro
- ¼ cup pickled red onions (optional)
Instructions
- Marinate the Shrimp: In a medium bowl, toss the peeled and deveined shrimp with taco seasoning, olive oil, and the juice from half a lime. Ensure the shrimp are evenly coated with the seasoning and marinade.
- Sear the Shrimp: Heat a skillet over medium-high heat until hot. Add the shrimp and cook for 2–3 minutes per side until they turn opaque and develop a slight char. Remove from heat.
- Prepare the Crema: In a small bowl, combine sour cream, the juice of the remaining half lime, and garlic powder. Mix well to create a smooth, tangy lime-garlic crema.
- Make the Slaw: In another bowl, toss the shredded cabbage with the lime juice and a pinch of salt. Let it sit for a few minutes to soften and absorb the flavors.
- Warm the Tortillas: Using a dry skillet over medium heat, warm each corn tortilla for about 30 seconds on each side until pliable and slightly toasted.
- Assemble the Tacos: On each warmed tortilla, layer a generous amount of the cabbage slaw, followed by seared shrimp, avocado slices, and a drizzle of the lime crema. Top with chopped cilantro and pickled red onions if using. Serve immediately for the best flavor and texture.
Notes
- For extra heat, add a pinch of cayenne pepper or hot sauce to the shrimp marinade.
- Pickled red onions are optional but add a tangy crunch that complements the tacos beautifully.
- If corn tortillas are unavailable, flour tortillas can be substituted, though corn tortillas provide the best authentic texture and flavor.
- Leftover shrimp can be stored in the fridge for up to 2 days but are best enjoyed fresh.
- To make this dish gluten-free, ensure taco seasoning and tortillas are certified gluten-free.
