Description

Crab Crunchies are a deliciously crunchy and creamy seafood appetizer that’s perfect for parties or as a starter. Made with cooked crab meat, cheese, and seasoned breadcrumbs, these bite-sized treats are oven-baked to crispy perfection without frying, making them a lighter option. Quick and easy to prepare in under 30 minutes, they can be customized with spices, herbs, or a touch of heat to suit your taste.

Ingredients

Scale

Crab Crunchies Filling

  • 1 cup cooked crab meat (fresh, canned, or imitation)
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs (regular or panko for extra crunch)
  • 1/2 cup grated cheese (cheddar, Monterey Jack, or Parmesan)
  • 1/4 cup mayonnaise
  • 2 tablespoons finely chopped green onions
  • 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • Pinch of paprika (optional)

Coating and Finishing

  • Additional breadcrumbs for coating
  • Olive oil spray or melted butter for brushing

Optional Add-ins

  • A dash of hot sauce or cayenne pepper for heat
  • Chopped parsley for freshness
  • Lemon zest for brightness

Instructions

  1. Preheat and prep: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or lightly grease it to prevent sticking.
  2. Mix the filling: In a medium mixing bowl, combine the cooked crab meat, breadcrumbs, grated cheese, mayonnaise, green onions, Dijon mustard, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, pepper, and optional paprika. Mix everything thoroughly until the mixture holds together well. Taste and adjust seasoning as needed.
  3. Shape into balls: Using a spoon or cookie scoop, form small bite-sized balls or patties with the crab mixture. Roll each ball lightly in the additional breadcrumbs to add extra crunch.
  4. Bake to perfection: Arrange the coated crab balls on the prepared baking sheet. Lightly spray or brush the tops with olive oil or melted butter to help them crisp up while baking. Bake in the preheated oven for 15 to 18 minutes, or until they turn golden brown and crispy.
  5. Cool slightly and serve: Remove the Crab Crunchies from the oven and let them cool for a few minutes. This resting time helps them firm up, making them easier to handle and serving them at an ideal temperature.

Notes

  • Use either fresh, canned, or imitation crab meat based on availability and preference.
  • For extra crunch, use panko breadcrumbs both inside the filling and for coating.
  • Customize flavor with additional spices like cayenne pepper or fresh herbs such as parsley.
  • These Crunchies can be made ahead and reheated, making them great for entertaining.
  • Serve with lemon wedges or a dipping sauce of your choice for enhanced flavor.
