Description

A delicious Hot Honey Sweet Potato Casserole featuring tender mashed sweet potatoes sweetened with spicy hot honey and topped with a crunchy corn flakes and pecan crumble. This comforting dish combines a perfect balance of sweet, spicy, and buttery flavors, baked to golden perfection and ideal as a standout side for any meal.

Ingredients

Scale

Sweet Potato Base

  • 3 pounds sweet potatoes (peeled and cut into 1 inch cubes)
  • ½ cup hot honey
  • ½ cup butter
  • ¼ teaspoon cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon salt

Topping

  • ¾ cup hot honey (divided)
  • ¼ cup butter
  • ¼ teaspoon cinnamon
  • 3 cups corn flakes
  • ½ cup pecans

Instructions

  1. Preheat the Oven: Set your oven to 375°F (190°C) and grease a 9 inch by 13 inch baking dish. This will ensure the casserole doesn’t stick and bakes evenly.
  2. Cook the Sweet Potatoes: Bring a large pot of water to a boil on the stovetop. Add the peeled and cubed sweet potatoes and simmer them for about 15 minutes until they are fork-tender. Drain well in a colander.
  3. Mash the Sweet Potatoes: In a large bowl or the pot used for cooking, combine the drained sweet potatoes with ½ cup hot honey, ½ cup butter, ¼ teaspoon cinnamon, and ¼ teaspoon salt. Use an electric hand mixer or potato masher to mash everything until smooth and well combined.
  4. Prepare the Casserole Base: Spread the mashed sweet potato mixture evenly into the prepared baking dish as the casserole base.
  5. Make the Topping Mixture: Melt the remaining ¼ cup butter in a medium bowl. Stir in the remaining ¼ cup of hot honey and ¼ teaspoon cinnamon until well blended.
  6. Prepare Crunchy Topping: Crush the corn flakes and pecans together using a food processor or place in a plastic zipper bag and crush with a rolling pin. Mix this crushed mixture into the melted butter and honey mixture to create a crunchy, flavorful topping.
  7. Top and Bake: Evenly sprinkle the crunchy corn flakes and pecan topping over the sweet potato base in the baking dish. Place the casserole in the oven and bake for 20 minutes until the topping is golden brown and crisp.
  8. Serve: Remove from oven and, if desired, drizzle with additional hot honey before serving to add an extra kick of sweet heat.

Notes

  • For the hot honey, you can either purchase pre-made hot honey or make your own by infusing honey with chili flakes or hot sauce.
  • You can adjust the amount of hot honey to taste, adding more for extra heat or sweetness.
  • To keep the pecans crunchy, add them just before topping rather than blending completely.
  • This casserole pairs well with savory dishes like roasted meats or holiday dinners.
  • Leftovers can be refrigerated and gently reheated in the oven or microwave.
