Ingredients
Scale
Apple Mixture
- 10 medium Granny Smith apples, peeled, cored, and sliced (about 10 cups)
- 1 cup packed light brown sugar
- 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
Crisp Topping
- 2 cups quick oats
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 2 cups packed light brown sugar
- 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
- 1 cup (2 sticks / 227g) cold unsalted butter, cubed
Instructions
- Preheat and Prepare: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a 9×13 inch baking dish using nonstick cooking spray or butter to prevent sticking.
- Prepare Apple Mixture: In a large mixing bowl, combine the sliced apples, 1 cup of brown sugar, 1 tablespoon of flour, and 1 teaspoon of ground cinnamon. Stir gently until all the apples are evenly coated with the sugar mixture. Set this mixture aside.
- Prepare Crisp Mixture: In a separate medium bowl, combine 2 cups of quick oats, 2 cups of all-purpose flour, 2 cups of brown sugar, and 2 teaspoons of ground cinnamon. Add the cold cubed butter and use your hands or a fork to incorporate it into the dry ingredients until the butter pieces are about the size of peas or smaller, creating a coarse, crumbly texture.
- Assemble Crisp: Spread 3 cups of the crisp topping mixture evenly on the bottom of the prepared baking dish, pressing down firmly to form a base. Pour the apple mixture over the crisp base and press down gently using a spatula. Evenly sprinkle the remaining crisp mixture over the top of the apples.
- Bake: Place the baking dish in the oven and bake uncovered for 35-45 minutes, or until the apple filling is bubbling and the topping turns golden brown and crisp.
- Cool and Serve: Allow the apple crisp to cool slightly before serving. For an extra special touch, serve warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream to complement the tart apples and crunchy topping.
Notes
- Use Granny Smith apples for a tart flavor that balances well with the sweet topping.
- Allow the butter to be cold when mixing it into the topping to achieve a nice crumbly texture.
- You can prepare the crisp topping in advance and refrigerate it until ready to assemble.
- For a gluten-free version, substitute all-purpose flour with gluten-free flour.
- Serve warm and enjoy with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream for added indulgence.
