Description
Coquito is a traditional Puerto Rican holiday drink, often enjoyed during Christmas, featuring a creamy blend of coconut milk, cream of coconut, evaporated milk, and sweetened condensed milk with warm spices and a splash of rum. This rich, smooth coconut eggnog-like beverage is perfect served chilled and garnished with cinnamon sticks and a sprinkle of nutmeg.
Ingredients
Scale
Liquids and Milks
- 12 oz evaporated milk
- 14 oz sweetened condensed milk
- 15 oz cream of coconut
- 13.5 oz coconut milk
Flavorings and Spices
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- Ground nutmeg (optional, for garnish)
- Cinnamon sticks (for garnish)
Alcohol
- 0.5 to 1 cup white rum (optional)
Instructions
- Blend the Base: Add the evaporated milk, sweetened condensed milk, cream of coconut, and coconut milk into a blender. Blend until the mixture is fully smooth and creamy.
- Add Flavorings and Rum: Pour in the vanilla extract, ground cinnamon, and white rum if using. Blend again briefly just to combine all the ingredients evenly.
- Chill the Mixture: Transfer the mixture into a pitcher or sealable bottles. Chill in the refrigerator for at least 4 hours or preferably overnight to allow the flavors to meld and the drink to thicken slightly.
- Serve and Garnish: Shake the coquito well before serving. Pour into small glasses and garnish each with a cinnamon stick and a light sprinkle of ground nutmeg or cinnamon for an aromatic presentation.
Notes
- Use good quality cream of coconut for the best flavor and sweetness.
- The amount of rum can be adjusted or omitted entirely for a non-alcoholic version.
- Chilling overnight improves the texture and flavor absorption.
- Shake well before serving as the mixture may separate slightly in the refrigerator.
- Store leftovers in the refrigerator and consume within 5-7 days.
