Description
This smooth and creamy Cream Cheese Frosting is the perfect sweet topping for cakes, cupcakes, and other desserts. You can adjust the consistency with a splash of milk or heavy cream to achieve the ideal texture for spreading or piping.
Ingredients
Scale
Frosting Ingredients
- 8 oz (225 g) cream cheese, softened
- 1/2 cup (115 g) unsalted butter, softened
- 4 cups (500 g) powdered sugar, sifted
- 2 tsp pure vanilla extract
- 1-2 tbsp milk or heavy cream (optional, for consistency)
Instructions
- Beat cream cheese and butter: In a large mixing bowl, beat the softened cream cheese and unsalted butter together using an electric mixer on medium speed until the mixture is smooth and creamy, about 2 to 3 minutes.
- Add powdered sugar gradually: Slowly add powdered sugar one cup at a time to the bowl, mixing on low speed to prevent sugar clouds. Once each addition is incorporated, increase to medium-high speed and beat until well blended and fluffy.
- Incorporate vanilla extract: Pour in the pure vanilla extract and continue to beat the frosting for an additional minute to fully combine the flavors.
- Adjust frosting consistency: If the frosting is too thick, add milk or heavy cream one tablespoon at a time, mixing after each addition until desired spreading or piping consistency is achieved. For a thicker frosting, add more powdered sugar as needed.
- Store or use: Use the cream cheese frosting immediately on your baked goods, or store it in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to one week. Before using chilled frosting, bring it to room temperature and rewhip briefly to restore the creamy texture.
Notes
- Ensure cream cheese and butter are softened to room temperature for a smooth frosting without lumps.
- Sift powdered sugar before adding to avoid grainy texture.
- This frosting works well on cakes, cupcakes, cinnamon rolls, and cookies.
- Refrigerate unused frosting and bring to room temperature before reusing to maintain best texture.
- You can flavor the frosting further by adding citrus zest or other extracts, but vanilla is classic and versatile.
