Ingredients
Scale
Filling
- 2 cups cherry pie filling
- ¼ cup light brown sugar
- 1 Tablespoon cornstarch
- ¼ teaspoon almond extract (or vanilla extract)
Pastry
- 1 box puff pastry dough (2 pastry sheets), thawed in the refrigerator
- 1 large egg
Glaze
- 1 ¼ cups powdered sugar
- 1 to 2 Tablespoons milk
- ¼ teaspoon almond extract (or ½ teaspoon vanilla extract)
Instructions
- Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and line two large baking sheets with parchment paper to prepare for baking.
- Prepare Filling: In a large mixing bowl, combine the cherry pie filling, light brown sugar, cornstarch, and almond extract. Stir well until the cornstarch is fully dissolved and the mixture is smooth. Set aside.
- Prepare Pastry Squares: On a lightly floured surface, slightly roll out one sheet of thawed puff pastry dough. Cut the dough into six 4×4 inch squares. Place the squares evenly spaced on one prepared baking sheet. Repeat the process with the second sheet of puff pastry dough and place the squares on the second baking sheet.
- Fill and Seal Turnovers: Place about 2 tablespoons of the cherry filling in the center of each pastry square. Fold each square diagonally to form a triangle and use a fork to crimp and firmly seal the edges, ensuring no filling can leak out during baking.
- Egg Wash: Beat the large egg in a small bowl and lightly brush the tops of each turnover to promote a beautiful golden-brown finish when baked.
- Bake Turnovers: Bake the turnovers in the preheated oven for 20 to 22 minutes or until they are puffed and golden brown. Remove the baking sheets from the oven and allow the turnovers to cool slightly on the sheets.
- Prepare Glaze: In a small bowl, whisk together the powdered sugar, milk (start with 1 tablespoon), and almond extract or vanilla extract until the glaze is smooth and pourable. Adjust milk quantity to reach desired consistency.
- Glaze and Serve: Drizzle the glaze over each cooled turnover. Allow the glaze to set briefly before serving. Enjoy your delicious Cherry Turnovers warm or at room temperature.
Notes
- Ensure the pastry edges are well sealed to prevent cherry filling from leaking out during baking.
- If the glaze is too thick, add a little more milk, one teaspoon at a time, to thin it out.
- For best results, thaw puff pastry completely in the refrigerator overnight before use.
- Use parchment paper on baking sheets for easy cleanup and to prevent sticking.
- Turnovers can be stored in an airtight container for up to 2 days but are best served fresh.
