Ingredients
Scale
Base
- 1 loaf brioche or French bread, cubed
- 1 1/2 cups fresh or frozen blueberries
Custard Mixture
- 6 large eggs
- 2 cups milk
- 1/2 cup heavy cream
- 1/2 cup maple syrup
- 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon
Garnish
- Powdered sugar for garnish
Instructions
- Prepare the baking dish: Grease a 9×13 inch baking dish thoroughly to prevent sticking, then add half of the cubed bread evenly to the base of the dish.
- Add blueberries: Sprinkle half of the fresh or frozen blueberries evenly over the bread layer. Repeat by layering the remaining bread cubes on top, followed by the remaining blueberries.
- Mix custard: In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, heavy cream, maple syrup, vanilla extract, and cinnamon until fully combined and smooth.
- Pour custard over bread: Evenly pour the egg mixture over the layers of bread and blueberries, ensuring all pieces are saturated.
- Refrigerate overnight: Cover the baking dish and refrigerate for at least 8 hours or overnight to allow the bread to absorb the custard mixture fully for a custardy texture.
- Preheat oven: Remove the casserole from the refrigerator and preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) for even baking.
- Bake the casserole: Bake the casserole uncovered for 45 to 50 minutes or until the top is golden brown and the center is set and firm to the touch.
- Rest and serve: Let the casserole cool for 10 minutes before slicing and serving. Optionally dust with powdered sugar for added sweetness and presentation.
Notes
- Use brioche for a richer flavor and soft texture; French bread can be a more affordable alternative.
- Frozen blueberries can be used directly; no need to thaw.
- To make ahead easier, assemble and refrigerate overnight as instructed.
- For added texture, consider sprinkling chopped nuts on top before baking.
- Leftovers can be refrigerated and reheated in the oven or microwave.
