Description

This Blueberry French Toast Casserole Delight is a perfect make-ahead breakfast treat combining the rich flavors of brioche soaked in a creamy maple custard with bursts of fresh blueberries. Baked to golden perfection, this casserole offers a sweet, comforting start to your day with minimal morning effort.

Ingredients

Scale

Base

  • 1 loaf brioche or French bread, cubed
  • 1 1/2 cups fresh or frozen blueberries

Custard Mixture

  • 6 large eggs
  • 2 cups milk
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 1/2 cup maple syrup
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon

Garnish

  • Powdered sugar for garnish

Instructions

  1. Prepare the baking dish: Grease a 9×13 inch baking dish thoroughly to prevent sticking, then add half of the cubed bread evenly to the base of the dish.
  2. Add blueberries: Sprinkle half of the fresh or frozen blueberries evenly over the bread layer. Repeat by layering the remaining bread cubes on top, followed by the remaining blueberries.
  3. Mix custard: In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, heavy cream, maple syrup, vanilla extract, and cinnamon until fully combined and smooth.
  4. Pour custard over bread: Evenly pour the egg mixture over the layers of bread and blueberries, ensuring all pieces are saturated.
  5. Refrigerate overnight: Cover the baking dish and refrigerate for at least 8 hours or overnight to allow the bread to absorb the custard mixture fully for a custardy texture.
  6. Preheat oven: Remove the casserole from the refrigerator and preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) for even baking.
  7. Bake the casserole: Bake the casserole uncovered for 45 to 50 minutes or until the top is golden brown and the center is set and firm to the touch.
  8. Rest and serve: Let the casserole cool for 10 minutes before slicing and serving. Optionally dust with powdered sugar for added sweetness and presentation.

Notes

  • Use brioche for a richer flavor and soft texture; French bread can be a more affordable alternative.
  • Frozen blueberries can be used directly; no need to thaw.
  • To make ahead easier, assemble and refrigerate overnight as instructed.
  • For added texture, consider sprinkling chopped nuts on top before baking.
  • Leftovers can be refrigerated and reheated in the oven or microwave.
